Often the obvious one is novel for others, that's why I happened to share a site that I use a few years ago. This is Couchsurfing.com, born as a community where people could offer their couch who were passing through their city, but it became a portal where people can connect to travel in or about to travel to share experiences, advice, data, and, if they so wish, shelter.
While I never had the experience to provide a bed to a traveler, I use a lot to ask the natives of the place where I data on housing in the city, advice on places to visit, etc.. Highly recommended to develop relationships with new people around the world with similar interests.
